I am a very proud volunteer for the Wisconsin Humane Society … When I retired from my library career, I knew I still wanted to make a difference in the world. I have been an animal lover and advocate for many many years, so it was a natural transition for me to become a volunteer at the Wisconsin Humane Society. I became a volunteer in September of 2008, and the Wisconsin Humane Society had just given refuge to over 1600 dogs that came from a puppy mill that had just shut down. I was doing dog bathing at the time, and I will never forget the very first dog that I gave a bath to that came from this puppy mill. It was a little miniature poodle, and his name was Nunzio. I had never in my life had a dog that was afraid of me. Nunzio was so scared; he didn’t know where he was or what was going to happen to him. We gave him a bath. I was the one who had the privilege of bathing him, and he stood like a statue. And he just shook. I think there were more of my tears in the bathtub at that time than there was water from the faucet. When I was done, I took him out of the tub and wrapped him in a warm towel, put him over my shoulder and started to rock him. All of a sudden, he let out a deep sigh - and relaxed - and buried his little face in my neck. There and then, I knew. I had found my legacy. I had found my passion. And it was going to be helping animals through the Wisconsin Humane Society. The Wisconsin Humane Society SAVES LIVES every day. And I am going to be able to help continue that mission even after I’m gone, by being a member of Buster’s Legacy Society. I hope that many of you will consider joining Buster’s Legacy Society and remembering the Wisconsin Humane Society in your estate planning. On behalf of the animals, the incredible staff, and the many volunteers that we have here at the WHS, thank you for taking the time to listen to this program, and I hope that you will join me in being a member of Buster’s Legacy Society.
